Wake Up And Smell The Flowers: Tips for Living Happier

If Pharrell William’s hit song, “Happy,” hasn’t inspired you to live a happier life yet, the following list certainly will.

From affirmations to meditation and yoga, we’ve got the lowdown on how to bring a slice of happiness into each and everyday (dancing for no reason included).

Affirmations
Thanks to movies showing negative imitations of hippies throwing up peace signs and screaming for self-love, affirmations have gotten a bad reputation in the past. Well, it’s time to shatter those stereotypes because affirmations are an excellent tool for raising your confidence, self-esteem and overall happiness. By repeating simple statements throughout the day, such as, “everywhere I go, I bring joy,” you will believe in yourself and the endless possibilities in life and start attracting positive things. Check out Louise Hay as a great place to start.

Meditation
Meditation is one healthy practice that comes with some serious happiness benefits. You can practice by yourself in a quiet room or try guided meditations with apps like Headspace. The app allows users to take just 10 minutes out of their day, leaving them mentally alert, refreshed and calmer. John Kabat-Zinn is another meditation guru who teaches participants to reduce stress, depression and anxiety from their lives.

Yoga
You’ve probably already heard about the benefits of yoga for the body, such as increasing strength and flexibility, but for the mind, yoga can be an effective remedy in treating mental disorders, like depression and anxiety. Take 30 minutes a day to practice or, if you simply need a happiness boost, the downward dog is a perfect move for rushing blood and oxygen to the brain, therefore creating those feel-good euphoric feelings.

Self-Love and Body Acceptance
Loving yourself is one of the most powerful things you can do. If you don’t have self-love or body acceptance, you will lack confidence and never feel worthy enough to achieve what you want in life. Affirmations and self-love go hand in hand, but another exercise is simply staring at yourself in the mirror and repeating the statement, “I love you.” Along with the mirror exercise, start making a serious effort to watch your negative self-talk and replace it with positive, more soothing statements.

Hobbies/Passion
Nothing says happiness like doing something you love. Whether it’s reading, writing or even going for a bicycle ride, do it! Tapping into your passions will help you feel more creative, committed and focused on yourself. Also, learning a new skill is an excellent way to boost your self-esteem and make new friends. Win-win.

Dancing For No Reason
And finally, dancing for no reason is at the root of happiness. You can try group classes like Zumba or, if you’re more comfortable dancing alone, simply putting on your favourite songs and dancing around the house will have you burning off calories and starting your morning off right.
